STONE MAGIC BY NORMA LARSEN

sandstone sculpture by Norma Larsen
Sculpture was one of my mother's life passions. She had a way of bringing stone to life and often her pieces had a wonderful sense of calm.

CATCHING THE SUN IN BROOME

I travelled to Broome recently which is in Western Australia  in a region called The Kimberly. A place of stunning sunsets, red, red earth, warm balmy weather and glorious vistas. About 400 km south is a place called 80 Mile Beach which is shell paradise! The beach is adorned with trillions of shells, coral and other sea jewels.

DESERT ARTISTS

Billy Benn painting in the Bindi studio
Cockatoo's by Jane Mervin
I am in Alice Springs at the moment which is in the Desert in the middle of Australia. Yesterday I was lucky enough to visit the Bindi Art Gallery and studio which provides supported employment for artists with disabilities. There was a wonderful array of bright vibrant paintings in production and on display.

PUCKER UP

I  have been taking photo's recently of all my mum's (Norma Larsen) paintings. Strange as it may seem I had never really noticed how beautifully she painted lips. I so love the textures and palette of hues she produced in her paintings.

MY MOTHER'S MOTHER

"Marnie" By Norma Larsen

This is a painting of my grandmother at age 21. My mother, Norma Larsen, painted it about 7 years ago and I remember her being particularly pleased with her work on the lace. I just love the background which is adorned with a variety of Australian native flowers.

"GIRL IN WHITE HAT" BY NORMA LARSEN

"Girl in white hat"  Norma Larsen
My Mother Norma Larsen was a truly passionate artist.
She lived surrounded by art and books and spent her time
painting, sculpting, reading, googling, emailing, printing, gardening,
silversmithing, drawing, learning and loving and so much more.
In the coming months I will be show-casing some of her life's work.

INALUXE

Last time I was in the States I bought a fantastic bag made by www.blueq.com When I checked out my purchase on line I was surprised to see the designers were Australians creating under the name of inaluxe. They are small independent design studio based in the Grampians in Victoria. Artists Kristina Sostarko and Jason Odd have the most amazing range of fantastic prints in their collection. Their sense of design and colour are superb. Check them out at inaluxe.blogspot.com.au

WOOL BALE STENCIL ART

Continuing on with my fascination for old metal wool-bale stencils, I have just finished stencilling these cushions. I used a natural colour linen to print on and the backing with ripped fringe is in a reproduction ticking fabric. I made the bottom cushion for some friends who have a fine merino stud at Colebrook in Tasmania. It was great to be able to use the same stencils that they use on their wool bales many of which end up in Italy.

DIGIT'S ABC

" Digit's ABC"
Digit Briggs is wonderful local character. He is the ultimate aussie true-blue fix it man. Give him an elastic-band and I am sure he could get a car going!! His passion is vintage tractors and his yard is tractor graveyard heaven. I had a wonderful time hunting for the perfect letters to make this photo collage.
Digit lives just near Remarkable Cave which is shaped like a map of Tasmania (remarkable!!)
